Located in Portland, Oregon, Luis Valentino is the Chief Academic Officer for Portland Public Schools. In this role, Luis has already acquired a multitude of achievements. Luis developed a PK-20 integrated instructional framework which includes a standards-based core curriculum across disciplines. He led graduation rate improvements to 83.7% and has been instrumental in the implementation of the district’s Comprehensive Distance Learning.

Luis R. Valentino is a visionary and pragmatic Education Executive with extensive leadership experience in both K-12 and higher education. He has a proven track record leading large-scale initiatives in complex organizations. Luis has the passion and skill to effect real change and moving school districts into the future. Additionally, Luis Valentino builds systems and structures that promote powerful teaching and learning experiences for students and staff.
Luis Valentino explains his philosophy as the following: “the thing that inspires me most is when I can be of service through action and inspiration. I like having an impact. More importantly, I feel most accomplished when I am able to empower others to act and inspire.”
His core competencies are numerous and include strategic planning, leadership development, grants and fundraising, budget management communication strategies, publishing, networking and partnerships, community empowerment, and much more. Additionally, Luis is fluent in both Spanish and English.
Luis Valentino earned his Bachelors of Science in Communications at The University of Texas at Austin. From there, he went on to earn his Master of Arts in Instructional Technology from California State University at Los Angeles, Master of Science in Education Administration from Pepperdine University, and finally, an Ed.D in Education Leadership from the University of California at Los Angeles. Most recently, in June 2020, Luis earned his Certification in Advanced Educational Leadership at Harvard.
Luis Valentino has had an illustrious career so far. He is a member of the International Association of Coaching, Center for Leadership and Educational Research, and a Founding Member of the Institute for Language and Education Policy. Awards include the Outstanding Leadership Award from United Teachers in Los Angeles, Friend of Parents Award, and Leadership Recognition from MALDEF in 2003.
Luis Valentino’s publications include “District Leader: Transforming Education” (2016 –2018) (podcast), “Wiredprofiles: Education’s Weekly Digest,” in 2016, among others.
At present, Luis Valentino is the Chief Academic Officer of Portland Public Schools. In this role, he establishes collaborative relationships across schools and communities through open and honest communication.
